Why This Exists

A birthday caught between Christmas and everything else

For the project’s founder, December 27 eventually stopped feeling like a day that belonged to him. As a teenager, Christmas and his birthday were combined, the separate celebration disappeared, and after years of moving as part of an Air Force family, friendships and traditions changed constantly. Watching other people be celebrated throughout the year could make a December 27 birthday feel almost invisible.

One year changed that feeling. On Christmas Eve, he and a local chef helped feed 25 women at SisterHouse in Oak Park. Instead of focusing on what his own birthday might be missing, he spent the holiday helping other people — and remembers it as one of the few years he did not feel sorry for himself at all. Having also experienced homelessness earlier in life, the connection between celebration, dignity, housing, food, recovery and opportunity became personal.

That experience is the heart of this idea: What if 1,000 people born December 27 came to Chicago not only to celebrate their birthday together, but to leave Chicago better than they found it?

Chicago service + community funding concept: If 1,000 participants each complete 20 verified hours, the project could generate 20,000 hours of Chicago-area community service. In addition, the current goal is for a majority of event participation/admission revenue—not lodging charges—to benefit selected Chicago organizations focused on feeding and food security, housing and homelessness, counseling and recovery, and workforce development. The exact percentage or amount, recipient organizations, legal structure and distribution terms would be disclosed before any participant payments are accepted.
Organizations that illustrate the type of local impact envisioned: Chicago-area nonprofits such as Inner Voice Chicago and SisterHouse Chicago work in areas that overlap with these priorities. They are examples only at this feasibility stage; neither organization is represented as a confirmed beneficiary, partner, sponsor or endorser of this project.
Why limit it to about 1,000 people? The smaller audience is part of the concept. Rather than a stadium-style experience, the goal is to create a more personal, close-to-the-performance atmosphere where attendees can feel meaningfully closer to an A-list headline artist. The exact proximity, seating, interaction and performance format would depend on the venue and final artist agreement, and no performer is currently confirmed.
Preferred host-hotel model: The project is envisioned as a two-night destination experience at a single upscale Chicago hotel, with the same property ideally serving as both lodging headquarters and the private event/performance venue. This could keep lodging, registration, participant check-in, meals and the headline performance within one coordinated property and reduce reliance on public third-party concert ticketing. Final arrangements would be established by contract.
Projected Pricing
Current planning assumptions — not a current offer for sale:
• Lodging: $1,000 per person, per night; projected two-night lodging total: $2,000 per person.
• Event participation/admission: $1,227.27 per person.
• Projected two-night lodging + event participation total: $3,227.27 per person, before transportation or other items not ultimately included.
• The preferred model is for the host hotel to also serve as the private event/performance venue.
• The current goal is for a majority of event participation/admission revenue—not lodging charges—to benefit selected Chicago community organizations. The exact allocation would be defined and published before payments are accepted.

Community Service & Commitment

Proposed participant-funds protection: The current concept is that, once the event is sufficiently developed and formal terms exist, the $1,227.27 participant fee would be paid to an independent third-party escrow provider rather than directly to the organizer. Release and refund conditions would be set out in a written agreement. No escrow provider has been selected and no money is collected on this survey.
14. If the venue, dates, performer, refund terms and independent escrow arrangement were formally established, would you be willing to prepay the full $1,227.27 event fee into that escrow arrangement?
